Ralph & Russo Feather Dress | Haute Couture Evening Gown
Our Ralph & Russo feather dress is a statement evening gown crafted from silk georgette and hand-embellished with graduated ostrich plumage. Each feather is individually applied by our atelier team, creating movement and dimension that shifts with light.

We source ostrich plumage exclusively from certified French and South African suppliers who meet our animal welfare standards. Each feather is hand-selected for color consistency, plume density, and structural integrity before arriving at our atelier.

Bodice construction and fit
The bodice is built on a silk organza base with spiral steel boning at the side seams, center front, and princess seams. This internal structure provides support without restricting movement, allowing you to wear the gown comfortably for extended evening events.
We cut the bodice to sit at the natural waist and recommend scheduling your first fitting once the foundation is complete but before feather application begins. This allows our fitters to adjust dart placement, strap positioning, and overall bodice length to your torso proportions. A second fitting occurs after partial feather embellishment to confirm the gown’s balance and weight distribution.

Storage and preservation between wears
Ostrich feathers are delicate organic material that requires specific storage conditions to maintain their structure and prevent deterioration. We include a breathable cotton garment bag with every gown — never store feathered garments in plastic, which traps moisture and causes the quills to become brittle.
Hang the gown by its interior hanger loops in a cool, dry closet away from direct sunlight. Feathers will naturally settle and compress slightly over time, which is normal. Before wearing the gown again, gently shake it to restore feather lift, or use a cool hairdryer on the lowest setting held 12 inches away to fluff compressed plumage.

Ralph & Russo feather dress fitting and care
The completed gown weighs approximately 3.5 to 4 pounds depending on the density of feather application and the specific size. The weight is distributed across the bodice and skirt, so it doesn’t feel heavy when worn. Our internal boning and strap construction ensures the weight sits comfortably on your frame without pulling at the shoulders or waist.
Yes, we ship our feather dress internationally and offer virtual fittings for clients who cannot travel to our London or Paris ateliers. For virtual fittings, we send detailed measurement instructions and request photographs at specific stages of production to ensure proper fit. We recommend scheduling an in-person fitting if you live within reasonable travel distance of our locations, but virtual fittings have proven successful for clients in North America, Asia, and the Middle East.
Minor feather shedding can occur with wear, though our application technique minimizes this. We include a small packet of matching replacement feathers with every gown along with reattachment instructions. For more extensive feather damage, you can return the gown to our atelier for professional repair. Repair costs vary depending on the extent of the work required, but typical single-feather reattachment is complimentary within the first year of ownership.
We offer custom feather dyeing services for clients seeking specific color palettes. The dyeing process adds approximately three weeks to the standard production timeline and requires a minimum dye lot to ensure color consistency across all feathers on the gown. We can match nearly any color reference you provide, though very dark or saturated tones may require multiple dye applications which extends the timeline further.
We provide a rigid garment box with interior suspension designed for travel. For air travel, we recommend carrying the gown in its box as cabin luggage rather than checking it, as cargo hold conditions can compress the feathers. If you must check the gown, request fragile handling and place the garment box inside a larger protective case. Upon arrival, hang the gown immediately and use a cool hairdryer on low setting to restore any compressed feather volume.
Significant bodice alterations after feather application are limited because the feathers are stitched and adhered directly to the silk georgette foundation. We can adjust strap length and perform waist suppression up to one inch without disturbing the feather placement. Larger alterations require partial feather removal and reapplication, which incurs additional costs and extends the timeline by two to three weeks. We strongly encourage finalizing your measurements during the initial fitting before feather work begins.
Our standard hem is set for a 3.5-inch heel during your final fitting, which allows the gown to graze the floor without dragging. If you prefer a different heel height, inform your fitter during the second appointment so we can adjust the hem before final feather application. The feather embellishment extends to the hem edge, so post-production shortening requires careful feather repositioning and is more complex than a standard hem adjustment.
